Saint John Damascene | Defender of Holy Images & Doctor of the Church | Feast Day: December 4
Saint John Damascene (c. 676–749) was a brilliant priest, monk, and writer who lived in Damascus and later in the monastery of Mar Saba near Jerusalem. His feast day is celebrated on December 4. He is known for many amazing things: ✨ Defending the use of holy images (icons) when others wanted to destroy them ✨ Writing beautiful hymns and prayers used in the Church ✨ Explaining the Catholic faith clearly so everyone could understand ✨ Living a peaceful, prayerful life as a monk John lived during a time when the emperor wanted all religious images destroyed. But John boldly defended the tradition, teaching that images help us love and remember Jesus, Mary, and the saints. Because of this, he is honoured as a great Doctor of the Church — a teacher whose writings help us understand God.
