Salamanca University at night.
The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe, tracing its origins to 1218. The University was an influential centre of intellectual life, and this Patio (above), is its heart. During the Golden Age of Spain, Columbus came here to argue his case for exploration before its scholars, and from here friars and scholars in the School of Salamanca debated the morality of colonization, and discussed ideas of economics, philosophy and theology.
