Bishop About Coronavirus Regime: “We Have Experienced This Before”

The coronavirus restrictions remind Greek Catholic Oradea Bishop Virgil Bercea, 62, Romania, of the time under the Communist dictator Ceaușescu.

“We’ve experienced this before,” he told CatholicNews.com (April 11), “The situation recalls the closure of churches for more than 40 years under communism, when we had no possibility to worship, still less celebrate Easter.”

During communism all that remained was prayer at home. Bercea believes that although the circumstances are different between now and then, “the realities are much the same.”

Therefore, “many say the situation under communism has returned.”
