Prayer And Prayer: Yesterday Pope Francis attended the World Meeting of Religious Leaders in Assisi. He explained his presence by saying: “Men and women of all religions will be in Assisi not for a spectacle but simply to pray for peace.” At the same time Francis skipped the prayer at the Italian Eucharistic Congress in Genoa, which ended on Sunday. It was the first such event in decades without the presence of the Pope.
A Crime: Cardinal Elio Sgreccia called last week’s euthanasia-killing of a 17-year-old boy in Belgium, “a homicide disguised as consensual therapy” and a “crime.” Quote: “This was a abuse against a minor.” And: “It equates the deliberate act of giving death to a minor in a treatment to bring relief to the patient.” Sgreccia is the former president of the Pontifical Academy of For Life.
Abolishing Civil Rights: Last week, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, an agency established by the Congress in 1957, came to the conclusion that, “religious freedom” is a code word for discrimination, intolerance, racism, sexism, so called homophobia, Islamophobia, and so called Christian supremacy." The commission mentioned so called, “sexual orientation” and so called “gender identity” as protected categories despite those not being included in the commission’s mandate.
Toast: Incumbent Democratic New York Assemblywoman Margaret Markey lost the Democratic primary for her District. Markey spent 18 years of her life trying to stab the Catholic Church. Catholic League’s Bill Donohue comments: “Markey’s low point came this past spring when she falsely accused Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of trying to bribe her nearly a decade ago. It showed a side to her so dirty that no respectable person could stomach it. I called for her to resign in June. Now she’s toast.”
