Leo XIV Keeps Cardinal Roche Who Curtails the Traditional Latin Mass
- US bishops are announcing bans on the traditional Latin Mass in an attempt to comply with the late Pope Francis’ document, 'Traditionis Custodes'.
- It seems like an unjust document.
- The drive to implement Pope Francis’ directive continues. Eleven US dioceses have so far embraced this.
- You would have thought with the new Pope we might have seen a cessation of this.
- A brand new Latin Mass ban was announced for the Diocese of Knoxville in Tennessee. Priests there announced that they, along with their bishop, Mark Beckman, will begin to transition to the Novus Ordo in late December.
- It bears noting that the mandate of Cardinal Roche, who is the head of the Congregation for Liturgy, was just renewed by Leo XIV. It was Cardinal Roche's office, at least in the case of the Diocese of Knoxville, that reached out to the bishop: “Hey, are you implementing 'Traditionis Custodes'?” Meaning: When are you going to curtail that old rite? It seems to be an embrace of what's happening now from the current Pope.
- We heard from Leo XIV in a recent long interview, that if you celebrate the Eucharist in Latin and keep the incense and some of the trappings, that will be enough to satisfy the Latin Mass goers.
- There was a suggestion that if you want the old Mass, somehow you’re breaking unity with the Pope. It’s this idea that the Pope’s personal perspective or preferences can’t be wrong. Is it really that whatever the latest Pope says is what goes?
- If the Vatican Library can allow a Muslim prayer room, I think Catholics who love the old rite should be entitled to celebrate that rite in their parish?
- People in the United States moved across country to be closer to these traditional Latin Mass communities. But now the Masses have vanished in their communities.
