President of the Vatican Court Suspected of Aiding the Sicilian Mafia in 1992

The President of the Vatican Court, Giuseppe Pignatone, is under criminal investigation in Italy for aiding and abetting the Sicilian Mafia.

Pignatone is a former deputy prosecutor in Palermo and a former prosecutor in Reggio Calabria and Rome. The investigation in Caltanissetta concerns an alleged cover-up of a mafia investigation in 1992.

The judge was summoned for questioning by the Italian authorities on 31 July.

Along with Pignatone, former Palermo deputy prosecutor Gioacchino Natoli and financial police general Stefano Screpanti are also under investigation for aiding and abetting the mafia.

In Italy, when such cases go to trial, they usually end with a conviction in the first instance and an acquittal in the second.
