Egypt Seizes Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai - Evicts Monks

The Egyptian government has closed the famous Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai - the oldest continuously operating Christian monastery. It was built between 548 and 565.

A dubious court decision on Wednesday ruled the site will be turned into a museum.

The state force has already seized the property, and begun evicting the monks.

The Greek Orthodox Church condemned the move as a violation of religious freedom and cultural heritage. Despite promises by Egyptian President Sisi to protect the monastery, the decision contradicts earlier diplomatic agreements with Greece.
