Francis Calls Mother of Young Man Who Died After WYD

Luca Re Sartù, 24, from Marnate, Italy, died of a sepsis he allegedly contracted while sleeping in the field during World Youth Day in Portugal. A town-wide mourning was declared in Marnate.

Milan Auxiliary Bishop Luca Raimondi celebrated the August 18 funeral. “Luca, suddenly torn from his loved ones, may he be next to You eternally happy”, he told the congregation.

Luca's mother said at the funeral that Francis “cried with me” on the phone and “consoled me as if he were my father.”
