Leo XIV: No Cook Yet, but a Secretary Instead

Following his election on 8 May, Pope Leo XIV temporarily returned to his residence in the building of the Holy Office, which is located directly opposite the General Curia of the Augustinians.

Cardinal Prevost lived alone in his residence but continued to be a regular guest of his religious community at mealtimes.

On 13 May, Monsignor Lizardo Estrada Herrera, an Augustinian priest and auxiliary bishop of Cuzco, Peru, said that at lunch at the General Curia of the Order of Saint Augustine, Leo XIV told the brothers present that he was sorry, but would no longer be able to join them for meals regularly, only doing so on special occasions.

While Pope Leo XIV has not yet officially announced his future residence, rumours are circulating in the Vatican regarding the modest renovation of the third loggia of the Apostolic Palace, with the intention of restoring the papal apartment vacated by Benedict XVI on 28 February 2013.

It is unknown who will take care of the Pope's household.

However, his personal secretary is Don Edgard Iván Rimaycuna. He is 36 years old and from Chiclayo in Peru. Until recently, he was secretary to the Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops.

Pope Leo XIV and his secretary have a long-standing relationship, dating back to 2006 when Rimaycuna began his vocational journey at the Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo seminary in Chiclayo.

When Father Prevost returned to Chiclayo, first as apostolic administrator and then as bishop of the diocese, he needed someone he could trust, and so Rimaycuna began working with him.

The two remained very close until 2017, when Rimaycuna moved to Rome to continue his studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute.

In 2023, when Pope Francis appointed Prevost prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, he wanted Rimaycuna back at his side and called him to Rome.
