Today and every year on February 22nd, the Catholic Church marks the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter. This feast day brings to mind the mission of teacher and pastor conferred by Christ upon Peter which has continued in an unbroken line of succession right down to our present Pope, Pope Francis.
The feast of the Chair of Saint Peter was celebrated from the earliest days of the Christian era in commemoration of the day when St. Peter held his first service in Rome. The actual chair of Peter in Rome, the wooden throne at St.Peter’s Basilica, was given to Pope John VIII by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Bald in the year 875. It was enclosed in bronze by the artist GianLorenzo Bernini in 1647.
