Actually, they did have a purpose which was to keep Jesus' disciples from 'stealing' His body and faking The Resurrection. The Roman guards also had a second function, not as widely recognized in modern times. They also kept the foul blaspheming Jews in the pay of the Sanhederin priests from opening the tomb and desecrating the body.

So yeah, those guards did have a purpose and they did it.
