MALTA - MDINA: Tour and Christmas Concert.

Malta: A quick tour of Mdina and a Christmas concert by the St Paul Choral Society under the direction of Mro Dr Hugo Agius Muscat.

As we tour around we'll hear the Silent Night and later we hear and see live the Maltese traditional Carol "O Gesù Helwa Tarbija" (O Jesus sweet Child) both by Mro Dr Agius Muscat and his choir.

ST PAUL CHORAL SOCIETY
St Paul Choral Society was established in 1998 by Mro Dr Hugo Agius Muscat. It has almost 60 members and enjoy a very good reputation for their beautiful performances.

The St Paul Choral Society is today one of Malta's leading polyphonic choirs; its repertoire ranges from the 16th century to the present day. Established in 1998, it has almost sixty members who meet every Wednesday for practice in the Undercroft of St Paul's Anglican Pro-Cathedral. Since its inception it has been under the musical direction of Dr Hugo Agius Muscat.

They have performed around Malta and Gozo and also have performed abroad.

In 2009 it took part in the Malta International Choir Festival and Competition, organised by the Interkultur Foundation. The choir was the only Maltese one which competed with the visiting choirs from abroad. It won a Silver Diploma (Level V): the highest ever placing earned by a Maltese choir ever since the Interkultur Foundation established its global choir ranking system.

MDINA
Mdina, Città Vecchia, or Città Notabile, is the old capital of Malta. Mdina is a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the centre of the island. Punic remains uncovered beyond the city's walls suggest the importance of the general region to Malta's Phoenician settlers.

Mdina is commonly called the "Silent City" by natives and visitors.
Mdina was inhabited and possibly first fortified by the Phoenicians around 700 BC. The Phoenicians called it Maleth. Under the Roman Empire Malta became a Municipium and the Roman Governor built his palace in Mdina.

Much of its present architecture reflects the Fatimid Period which began in 999 AD until the Norman conquest of Malta in 1091 AD. The Normans surrounded the city with thick defensive fortifications and widened the moat.

Malta passed to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in 1530 AD. Mdina hosted the public ceremony in which each Grand Master swore an oath to protect the Maltese Islands and the rights of his subjects.

A strong earthquake in 1693 AD led to the introduction of Baroque design within the cityscape. The Knights of Malta rebuilt the cathedral, to the designs of Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa.
