Pope Francis’ repeated attacks on capitalism can be fiery yet the pope brushes aside how capitalism lifts so many of the world’s people out of poverty. As the renowned U. of C. economist Milton Friedman noted: “The only cases in which the masses have escaped (grinding poverty), the only cases in recorded history, are where they have had capitalism and largely free trade. If you want to know where the masses are worse off, worst off, it’s exactly in the kinds of societies that depart from that.”

What has Francis done to change any of the following: Homos running rampant in the Church while attendance plummets cara.georgetown.edu/frequently-requ…, as it did in other denominations. In the US, 55% of Catholics went to mass regularly in 1965; by 2000, only 22% did. In 1965, 1.3m Catholic babies were baptized in the US; in 2016, just 670,000. Whether this was cause or correlation remains fiercely disputed. Conservatives blamed it on the abandonment of eternal truths and traditional practices; progressives like Francis feel the church had not changed far or fast enough.

Does our faith absolutely center on Jesus the Christ or on an individual man whose loose tongue has done so much to discredit the Catholic Church and Christianity? If our faith centers on Christ, then why would anyone support any man who openly disrespects, defiles, disgraces and shames the very Church that Christ began 2000 years ago? I could not “respect” such a man no matter who he is.
