First Appointment: Marist Becomes Auxiliary Bishop in Peru
On 15 May, Pope Leo XIV appointed Father Miguel Ángel Contreras Llajaruna, a Marist priest, as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Callao in Peru.
This appointment was obviously prepared by him in his capacity as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. Bishop Prevost served as apostolic administrator in the same Diocese of Callao from 2020 to 2021.
Born on 5 July 1979 in Cajabamba, Peru, Contreras Llajaruna attended the Marist Fathers' seminary in Sullana-Piura and completed his philosophical studies at the Instituto Superior de Estudios Teológicos Juan XXIII in Lima.
He undertook his theological education at the Instituto Teológico Salesiano Cristo Resucitado in Guadalajara, Mexico.
He earned a licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Faculdade Jesuíta de Filosofia e Teologia in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He also has a master's degree in Educational Management and Leadership from the Universidad Marcelino Champagnat in Lima.
