Scarcity Sales Ploy... gone wrong?

Many web sites which sell items (such as amazon) now have added 'scarcity manipulation' in hopes that it will increase the chance of an immediate purchase.

Being who I am.... I saw "Only 2 left" as a reason to hold off the purchase until they restock. Maybe someone needs it more than I do... or it may be the damaged box.

When I spoke with a sales person on chat, and told them that; I think they were shocked to hear that could be the results...

Goes to show how behavioral projection can go wrong. I gathered that the sales person would have jumped to buy NOW (greed) and was surprised others didn't think the same...

I cannot say I intended to thwart their scarcity manipulation. But, it is good to know I do.

Sometimes those figures are honest. B&N inventory listed only 3 copies of "The Art and Soul of Dune." at a local store. Turns out there really were only 3 copies and only 2 copies after I left. ;-)

Seldom do I act when pressured.
I do not shop. I buy.
I go to a store (any kind) because I know I want something. Why else would I be there?
WAAAAAAY back when... K-Mart had a "Blue light special"... a trolly with a blue whoopy light would be placed where they wanted customers to run and buy the left handed cheese cloth (or some odd thing). Usually I knew where I didn't want to go... Just like …More

Inventory information, if it's true, isn't pressure. Ages ago, pre-internet, I used to have the same distrust. I still remember the Critics Choice Music catalog warning buyers: "Limited Quantities." I shrugged it off and bitterly, bitterly regretted it. Otherwise, the big-money collectors would have sent the price right through the moon.

"Why else would I be there?"

...same reason people have browsed market-places and bazaars for thousands of years. You may find something useful or desirable except you didn't know it existed. I visit automotive supply stores and places like Harbor Freight Tools for just that reason. Even when guys in those stores are looking at me like...what are you even doing in here?

I love shopping and I love shoppers like you.. :)

"Maybe someone needs it more than I do... or it may be the damaged box"

That'll be me. I totally need it moar than you do and I don't care about the box. Besides, those end up in the "Store Display/ As Is" section anyway. :D

Nothing new here - Home Shopping and Ronco industries have been doing this for years ("Call right away - supplies are limited!)

Scarce Move 2. A very poor comedy. Or cheap I should say.
