Elias Leyds CSJ Committed Suicide

Father Elias Leyds was found dead in his room on Wednesday, "two days after his self-inflicted death", reports anti-Catholic Dutch media activist Hendro Munsterman (Nd.nl).

The community of the Brothers of St John, to which Leyds formally belonged, write on their website that an investigation into the circumstances of the death is under way. In contrast, Munsterman adds that the investigation was completed on Wednesday morning and that several sources confirmed that Leyds died of suicide.

Munsterman describes Elias as "particularly zealous in proclaiming the Catholic faith" and "combative". He liked to provoke: "Christ also provoked, but always to bring out the best in others," he said.

"Since childhood, I have always had a sense of restlessness," Father Leyds said in 2014: "When I read the Book of Revelation in the Bible, I knew: this is right. I am not the only one who is crazy. The world is going to end one day."

He also practised boxing and worked for a time as a prison chaplain. He sometimes liked to show a tough side and used misogynistic slogans. He worked in Lithuania and Russia, among other places.

Leyds knew the Roman Mass and had not lived among his neo-conservative brethren for 10 years.

Four days before his death, he told listeners of Radio Maria: "Be optimistic, keep hope despite the confusion. The clearer the darkness comes to light, the less powerful it becomes. This is the Church of Christ. What He is allowing now, sadly, we have to accept as a challenge to our faith, but sooner or later we will see before our own eyes all of Satan's plans fall apart".

An EWTN colleague remembers him as "an incredibly impressive figure", "highly educated, witty, courageous, authentic, humble" and with "a wonderful sense of humour". At the same time, he was "down-to-earth and approachable".

If the cause of death was suicide, which is a mortal sin, there must have been a hidden side to this charming and devout priest.

May God have mercy on his soul.

Just as much a “suicide” as the FSSP priest…I wonder if it has anything to do with the peaceful immigrant population…

Louis IX

If the journos are so sure it was suicide then why not a cause of death and description of the crime scene? What kind of reporting is that?

I doubt that he killed himself.

SonoftheChurch

I will never, ever believe that this good Priest died by his own hands in suicide. On the contrary, Satan is the father of lies, and was a murderer from the beginning.

Steven Maters

I think the same. He had a real love for the Truth and the fire to bring it.

Sandy Barrett

Could some Dutch faithful find out if there were (fake?) sex-abuse accusations? This ruins priests.

Steven Maters

Yes, I'm convinced of fake accusations. The policy, established during the investigations in 2010 and 2011 (as per the Deetman Report) by the Dioceses, presumed all allegations to be true.
The dioceses compensated all self-proclaimed victims without conducting investigations. From what I heard the Dioceses wanted to accept the immediate pain and put the matter behind them.
The majority of the accused priests had already passed away. An accusation was a direct route to receiving free money. To my understanding, the "compensation" was around 5000 Euros each.
This error is not unique; it mirrors mistakes made in numerous other countries.
Essentially, they've created an incentive program that facilitates attacks on the Catholic Church.
I was very shocked to hear this some time ago. With this kind of mismanagement, you don't need enemies.
Truth about everything.
I think all in the church are for punishment if real abuse happens, in my opinion the church should have gone out and told the Truth that this was a larger attack on the Catholic church and a framing tactic to show the priests as abusers. With the promise that all accusations would be investigated with the authorities.
Negligence of gross naivety. I don't know.

His own community:
"Given the contact with our brother in recent weeks (he attended various activities of the brothers, made plans for camps in the mountains, etc.), this news surprised and shocked us."
Overlijden br. Elias

There is no reason to believe in suicide. On the contrary, people like these can bother certain sectors.

Fernanda Dellucci

You mean secret services? Why?

Wilma Lopez

This credible journalist Henk Rijkers (lost his job for criticing Amoris Laetitia) seems to confirm the news:
"The rumours of an unnatural death were there from the first moment. It would be good if that could be cleared up. It does then illustrate the desperate situation into which this treacherous pontificate is driving honest priests who have given all their lives to the Church."

I though you are not simple minded Wilma Lopez. You are twisting the meanings of the words. You put a word "confirmation" in your own comment about somebody who actually is begging a questions and asking for clarity.
He is talking about "rumours and unnatural death" .
And you, you are translating that in "confirmation and suicide"!?

Ivan Tomas

Pure nonsense! A tipical anti-catholic slander of a Church haters.
Gloria should not be the one who share this kind of "news". Certainly not in such a way and length.
What a shame gloriatv!

DefendTruth

What if true?

Ivan Tomas

Then, but just then, defend that as the only real truth. You should know that, right?

Louis IX

Suicide speculation is incredibly irresponsible and uncharitable. Munsterman ought to be ashamed.

GTVisrockin

I do not believe for one moment he commit suicide!
