Shock During Consecration of Bishop in Spain

Monsignor José María Gil Tamayo, the new bishop of Ávila, Spain, was consecrated on December 16 by Valladolid Cardinal Ricardo Blázquez.

During the ceremony a 70-year-old cousin of Gil suffered a heart attack inside the cathedral. As a consequence, the liturgy was interrupted for more than 40 minutes.

Health workers immediately assisted the patient who, after resuscitation attempts, was moved to a hospital. Soon after the ceremony had resumed, it was confirmed that he had died.
