Vatican: More Strange Departures
Francis appointed on August 26 Sister Alessandra Smerilli, 43, an economist, as the Secretary ad interim of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development and Delegate for the Vatican Covid-19 Commission.
She replaces Monsignor Bruno Marie Duffé (secretary), 70, and Father Augusto Zampini (deputy secretary), 52, who both “returned to their dioceses.”
The new members of the Covid-19 commission are: Cardinal Turkson, Smerelli and Father Fabio Baggio, undersecretary of the [meaningless] section for migrants and refugees.
Duffé, from Lyon, France, and social ethicist, was only named in June 2017. Zampini, from San Isidrio, Argentina, a laywer and moral theologian, was appointed in April 2020 and headed the Covid-19 commission. LaNacion.com.ar (August 26) says that his “great dynamism and charisma” clashed with a “system that was still slow and bureaucratic.”
The dismissals came after Chicago Cardinal Blasé Cupich had investigated the dicastery.
