Tucho Addresses another Apparition: Madonna della Scoglio

Cardinal Tucho Fernández published on July 16 another statement on an alleged supernatural phenomenon. This time it concerns the Sanctuary of the "Madonna della Scoglio" ("Our Lady of the Rock") in Santa Domenica di Placanica, Calabria, Italy.

On May 17, Tucho changed the criteria for supernatural phenomena. His two main innovations were:
- more papal centralism: Previously, the bishops were normally responsible for supernatural phenomena, now it is the Vatican.
- a "pastoral" orientation: Instead of a yes or no judgement on the truth or falsity of a phenomenon, only an "experience of the Spirit" is recognised.

Tucho's new statement is favourable to the Italian Shrine with regard to the spiritual fruits derived from the alleged apparitions.

He responded to a request made on 3 June by Monsignor Francesco Oliva, Bishop of Locri-Gerace. Tucho writes that the pilgrims who visit the Sanctuary are a testimony of faith in a secularised world. He confirms the recognition 'Nihil obstat' proposed by Monsignor Oliva.

At the same time as Tucho's letter, Bishop Oliva published a decree supporting pilgrimages and prayer meetings at the Sanctuary.

On 11 May 1968, the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared to a farmer, Cosimo Fragomeni, 18. He said that the first apparition was preceded by a ray of light from a sandstone rock. The messages called for conversion and prayer, and for the town to become a centre of spirituality.

Cosimo cleared the area around the rock, built an embankment and dug a niche in which he placed a marble statue of Our Lady.

At first, it was a simple chapel, but the increasing number of visitors led to the construction of a large sanctuary. In 1987, Cosimo became a Franciscan tertiary.

Did not it start with infamous Medjugorje?

Tucho is cuckoo mucho.

Seabass

Whatever Tucho comments on, I'll ignore. Our Lady doesn't need anything from him.

@English Catholic
Well said! You have hit nails on heads there - many thanks for your clear-thinking comment.

Seabass

@English Catholic I agree with everything you said. If an apparition is real or isn't real, I'm sure we'll hear about it from someone other than Tucho. That is my only point. Whatever he says concerning Our Lady is completely irrelevant.

Do not forget; the third secret has not been divulged, and the consecration has not been done as Our Lady asked. Sister Lucy was silenced and another substituted. The Pope should remind the faithful about the Five First Saturdays and the Rosary and living a good life.

Also, Akita should be publicized, as essentially the same message as Fatima.

And not forgetting GARABANDAL........

Patricia McKeever

@giveusthisday I'm sorry to say that, while I originally believed in the Akita claims, I have changed my mind for a number of reasons, not least the fact that Sr Agnes described the angel as "she". In days of yore, just one such error was sufficient to bring an end to any Cause for Canonisation. So it has to be with claims of vision/locutions etc.

giveusthisday

I don't think angels actually are male and female. In any case, what's important is Our Lady is telling us over and over again to do penance, lead good lives, pray.

Patricia McKeever

@giveusthisday That's not the point, any sign of theological/doctrinal error nullifies any claims to supernatural visions etc. That used to be the end of the matter, both in the case of alleged apparitions/locutions and Causes for Canonisation. Nowadays, things are so lax, it's unbelievable - literally 🤭
