Father Peter Gumpel's Secret

The surname of Jesuit Father Peter Gumpel (1923-2022), the famous historian who wrote about Pius XII, was a pseudonym, Gumpel revealed to Kenneth L. Woodward (AmericaMagazine.org, October 18).

His real name was "von Hohenzollern." This is the royal dynasty that ruled Germany until 1918. Peter was an only son.

His family wanted him to marry and carry on the family line, but he was determined to become a Jesuit. He asked Cardinal Pacelli, who replied, "Follow your heart."

Gumpel never told Woodward exactly why he changed his name, but "the National Socialists were in power."

In 2013, Gumpel told his friend Paul Badde (video below), "I come from a very wealthy and very influential family." Responding to rumours that he was a von Hohenzollern, he said this was completely irrelevant. "I know these rumours and I will neither confirm nor deny them".

That's interesting, because the Hohenzollern family Idon't think was Catholic. At least I know Kaiser Wilhelm II ( resigned, 1919) was not a Catholic...in fact I think he was somewhat of an anti-Catholic bigot.
So if Fr. Gumpel was actually a Hohenzollern, maybe it was a Catholic branch. I know the royal family of Austria is very Catholic, and there's still alot of them.

Amazing how many deposed royal families still exist, and have alot of young blood. Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, France, Greece, Romania, Buigaria, Serbia, Russia, Montenegro,Croatia, even royal families from former Italian duchies still exist. The biggest surprise is that the Aisin Gioro familly (royal family of the last emperor of China) still exists and even has a claimant to the throne. Of course the royals of Iran,Iraq,Egypt,Libya and Tunesia are still around too.
I'd love to see most of the royals return to their thrones. Some were very good Catholic monarchs (Croatia, Brazil,Austria-Hungary)

Hat er konvertiert? Die Hohenzollern sind doch eigentlich Protestanten.
