Unexpectedly Low Cardinal Attendance at the Novemdiales

A majority of the cardinals chose not to participate in the nine days of mourning (novemdiales) for Francis on Monday and Tuesday.
On April 28, about 220 chairs were set up in St. Peter's Basilica, but they remained largely empty (photo above).
On April 29, only 140 chairs remained, but even those were largely empty (photo below).
"I prefer to pray at the tomb of St. Catherine," one foreign cardinal bluntly commented after lunch, according to SilereNonPossum.it.
Other voices said they wanted to meet the cardinals face to face and discuss fraternally rather than waste time listening to homilies in St. Peter's Basilica.
