Every August 15, Catholics around the world celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary—but the story behind this great feast reaches back many centuries. From the early Christian tradition of Mary's Dormition, to medieval accounts of St. Thomas and Mary's Holy Girdle, discover how devotion to the Assumption developed throughout the Church. In 1950, Pope Pius XII formally defined the Assumption as Catholic dogma in Munificentissimus Deus, teaching that Mary was taken body and soul into heavenly glory while leaving open the question of whether she experienced death. More than a historical doctrine, the Assumption points toward the Christian hope of resurrection and eternal life.

Der Überlieferung nach fertigte die Jungfrau Maria den Gürtel während ihrer Schwangerschaft aus Kamelhaar selbst an und übergab ihn nach ihrer leiblichen Aufnahme in den Himmel in einer Erscheinung dem Apostel Thomas. Der Überlieferung nach war Thomas der einzige Apostel, der bei der leiblichen Aufnahme Mariens in den Himmel nicht anwesend war. Er zweifelte an dem Ereignis wie schon an der Auferstehung Christi. Deshalb erschien Maria dem Zweifler und reichte ihm ihren Gürtel als Beweis.
