U.S. Bishops Want No Restrictions On Adding Migrants To Our Nation’s Welfare Roles

The Department of Homeland Security has proposed common-sense changes to immigration and government benefits in the determination if an individual is likely to become dependent on government assistance in the future, which could affect their eligibility for a green card or visa. The change would restore broader discretion to evaluate all pertinent facts and align with long-standing policy that aliens in the United States should be self-reliant and government benefits should not incentivize immigration.
The response from U.S. bishops was swift and predictable. In a 15-page letter, the general counsel of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, joined by officials of Catholic Charities USA and the Catholic Health Association of the United States, urged the Department of Homeland Security not to implement a proposed regulatory change on immigration and government benefits.
