"Is not this the fast that I choose [says the Lord]: Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house…" - Isaiah 58:6a. 7a, which is part of today's first reading at Mass. A delightful medieval fresco in San Lorenzo fuori le mura shows the Roman deacon saint, Lawrence, feeding the poor. One of the works of the deacons of Rome was to oversee the Church's charitable works and almsgiving. It was called 'diakonia', which is Greek for 'service'.
