Fra Angelico decorated the Convent of Saint Mark in Florence, adorning it twice with the representation of the Descent of Christ to Limbo. The first, autographed by Fra Angelico, is found in the Armadio degli Argenti, the Wardrobe of the Silversmiths; the second, where scholars recognise the help of his pupils, is frescoed in cell 31 of the convent. This room was reserved for the lay brothers, who were to draw, from the example of the Saviour's life, reason to meditate on the ultimate meaning of their works.
