The Bishop of Augsburg Was Forced Into Retirement

A huge scandal is shaking the German Church. Yesterday, a German newspaper uncovered details about the April 21th retirement of conservative Bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg. Three days later, Mixa withdrew his decision in a fax to the Pope – the newspaper reports. The Pope informed the president of the German Bishops’ Conference, archbishop Robert Zollitsch and the archbishop of Munich Reinhard Marx in a private audience about this withdrawal. Both archbishops then got in touch with Mixa intimidating him with bogus abuse allegations according to the German newspaper ‘Welt’. Two days later, Augsburg auxiliary bishop Anton Losinger contacted a prosecutor and accused Mixa exhibiting bogus abuse claims. The secretariat of the German Bishops’ Conference even organized a confidential press conference for handpicked journalists in order to spread the allegations. A few days later, the pope accepted the resignation of bishop Mixa.

The Priest is No Longer a Confessor

According to Cardinal Joachim Meisner of Cologne Catholic priests should view their work as a divine ministry, not as a profession. The Cardinal spoke to priests assembled in Rome last week for the closing of the Year for Priests. Meisner spoke at the basilica of St. Paul-outside-the-Walls. He emphasized in particular the priest's duty to hear confessions: "When the priest is no longer a confessor, he becomes a religious worker."

Bishop Protesting Again Against Society of Pius X.

Bishop Gerhard Mueller of Regensburg has again weighed in against plans by the Society of St. Pius X to ordain on June 26th thee priests. Since 1981 priestly ordinations take place in the seminary of the Society in the diocese of Regensburg. Mueller claimed that the ceremony would be a "provocation" in light of the irregular status of the SSPX. Other dioceses in the world where other ordinations of the Society will be taking place, have uttered no complaint.
