On 12 August, the renowned Father Brian Harrison, 80, published an open letter to Pope Leo XIV on OnePeterFive.com. The letter, dated 22 July, concerns Francis's document Amoris Laetitia. Father Harrison has taught many years at the Pontifical Catholic University in Puerto Rico, and returned in his old days to his native Australia. In his letter, he speaks of a "practically unprecedented problem" that Pope Leo XIV has inherited from his predecessor, Francis: Chapter VIII of Amoris Laetitia permits couples living in an "objectively sinful situation" as adulterers to receive Communion in certain cases. Father Harrison comments: "The clear tradition of the Church has been that, in no case whatsoever, may persons in that situation be given Holy Communion. This is the very troubling contradiction."
