Ascension Thursday: Ease, Repose, Victory.

Up until 1978, the Roman Pontiff the Pope use to get to and fro by being carried by what is called a gestatoria, which was a throne by which they carried him around in. Today’s feast of Ascension Thursday is riddled with ideas of ease and repose, where Christ works not but all the work of Redemption is total and fulfilled per se. So the Church doesn’t say that he walks nor any other image of movements but says assumed or taken up, carried by clouds, lifted up etc… So there is an ambience of ease, peace, repose - so this tranquility and order is accessible by all His Holy People through the sacraments and prayers. Even those of us that remain on earth, working out our salvation by fear and trembling, are experiencing a sort of “repose today” as we rejoice in this repose of a sure Christ and this ease in the midst of battle is accessible to us in varying degrees - so no need to exhaust ourselves in fears and despair albeit the battles rage around us. Christ invites us to hope. Then the next and last idea is to affirm that in the Ascension of Christ our weak human flesh, by which we daily fight with, is already pierced into Heaven through Christ. St Leo the Great says that we have ascended with Christ into Heaven, so another reason to let hope run wild in our minds and hearts today. When i meditate on the 2nd mystery of the Holy Rosary, I always think of Hebrews 4, 14-15. “We have a high priest that pierces the heavens and He bore our weakness and is tempted like us all, save sin. In other words, Jesus ascends on high and presents these wounds, these trophies to the Heavenly Father as an intercession for us in our here and now battles. Jesus shows the Heavenly Father in the deepest bowels of Heaven the pints of Roman Spittle to the Heavenly Father, His black eyes, His bloody nose and the Heavenly Father is so pleased that He starts to omnipotently grant us grace upon grace!
