Actually this passage was Shakespeare's coded musing on whether he should himself be willing to face martyrdom as a Catholic during the English Reformation.
Not many people know that he was the Cousin of St Robert Southwell, but also knew St Edmund Campion. A few of the activists in the Gunpowder Plot were also family connections of his !
