The Council of Trent crushed Protestantism
In 1527, under the reign of Charles V, troops commanded by the famous Constable of Bourbon invaded Rome and perpetrated a massacre. He was one of the richest men in France; when crossing the city gate, he was hit by a bullet and fell dead.
Two years later, the Turks captured Hungary and besieged Vienna with 300,000 Muslims. 20,000 Viennese, brave Catholics, defeated the attackers.
Protestantism spread to various nations, especially Germany and England. Renaissance paganism permeated literature and the arts.
Much more serious than all this was the situation of the Church: the clergy and the religious, even the Supreme Pontiffs, allowed themselves to be carried away by disordered passions.
