Brutalism: Ferrara Has A New "Church" (Pictures)

San Giacomo Apostolo Church in Ferrara, Italy, was built 2010-2021 and inaugurated last October.

From the outside, it looks like a train station. It is made out of "natural materials" in particular reeds and concrete to pay homage to environmentalism - as if natural materials were something new in church building.

Inside, the alleged church resembles an air-raid shelter or execution chamber with menacing grey walls. A tank barrier is used as Eucharistic table and the President's chair resembles a home sitting sauna. The floor reminds of a kitchen or toilet.

The building was designed by “Benedetta Tagliabue - Miralles Tagliabue EMBT” from Barcelona, an architecture firm specialist in wellness and care. They designed a meditation pavilion in Unazuki, Japan (1993) and a Buddhist temple in Tenerife (under construction).

That is about the worst example of a church I have ever seen, inside and out.

Thanks Fact-Checkers.

bleached white bones man centered.

No wonder no one goes to Mass, or even visits church, much in Italy. No wonder mostly all the religious Orders of nuns (except the few traditional ones) are dead institutions, just like their liberal counterparts in the USA. No wonder most seminaries in Italy only have 10-15 seminarians, when before Vatican II (and even before Bergoglio) they had twice as many more.
This "church" is evil, the impetus to build it that way is evil. This is the kind of "church" I believe Bergoglio/ Francis prefers and wants the Roman CAtholic Church to turn into. When he condemns tradition and the LAtin Mass, and speaks of a new "church" that is new and stirs our hearts....this is the kind of garbage I think he has in mind.

Stirs my stomach.

Isn't this a Star Trek set?

Looks like a museum backdrop uses to show cavemen

Public toilets complete with loo and wash basin on top of it (that'll certainly cause problems), swimming pool representation (?on the wall), organ pipes minus the organ and a cross decorated with the contents of Grannie's old buttons tin. Although my atheist/agnostic husband says "Where's the cross? That's not a Cross - it's a plus sign." Decorative pictures kindly donated (inspired) by hell.

I forgot - definitely for executions - comes with its own chopping block. Is the architect related to the guy who recently brought out a 'film' of the same name, by any chance?

I went to one parish that was just as ugly that had one of those full-immersion "living water" baptismal fonts - it means that one could hear the trickle from all over the bare, concrete (what's with that - it's not "natural" but man-made & industrial) church. Ushers reported an increase of mostly older people having to use the bathroom during Mass due to the subliminal tinkling sound 😬

Are those chairs for the sum total of attendees?

"Public toilets complete with loo and wash basin on top of it (that'll certainly cause problems),"
I couldn't stop laughing reading this great comment. It fits perfect. Thank you.
