India’s Poverty Priest Has Died

Father A. Pitchaimuthu, a priest of Pondicherry and Cuddalore Archdiocese, India, died January 20 at age 82. The last ten years of his life, he lived in a roadside hut. In this context, Sister Sujata Jena recalled the true story of a young boy who rang the bell of a convent. A sister who opened, asked him, “Have you eaten?” The boy answered that he lived on the pavement with his parents and four siblings, and that he had not eaten yet. He asked the sister, "How many times do you eat?" The nun replied, "Besides snacks, we have three meals together." Looking at the convent building the boy asked, “Is this your home?" The nun modestly replied, "No. I live here, but the convent doesn’t belong to me. We do not own anything because we take a vow of poverty." The boy paused, then he said, "I wish I could take the vow of poverty."
