Father Peter Gumpel, 98, a Jesuit and historian who cleared up the black legend created by Church haters to discredit Pius XII (+1958), died in Rome on 12 October.
Gumpel was born in Hanover, Germany. He was considered "the living memory of Pius XII", whose "kindness and ability to listen" he often recalled.
Through a mandate from Paul VI, Gumpel had access to all the documentation on the pontificate of Pius XII as early as 1965.
Gumpel showed how Pius XII had also done everything possible to help persecuted Jews during the Second World War. Later, however, many Jewish institutions "thanked" the Pope by slandering him, even though Pius XII had saved more than 100,000 Jews around the world.

Unless the Jesuits make a severe 'U turn' we will not see Jesuits of his calibre again. There were so many Jesuits, like Fr. Gumpel and Fr. James Schall, from the past who would have been appalled at how far their order has fallen from St. Ignatius' original objectives for his 'soldiers for Christ'.

German Jesuit Father Peter Gumpel, who tirelessly defended Pius XII against accusations he should have spoken out more during the Holocaust, has died aged 98.

I highly recommend The Rorate-Caeli Purgatorial Society (link below) to anyone and everyone concerned with providing relief for any soul whether or not the deceased were known to the one enrolling the soul(s). Any one may be enrolled in The Purgatorial Society and there is virtually no cost. For my part, I read various obituary pages daily on my computer from home and enroll deceased individuals and families identified there. Enrolling even one soul a day would not be too burdensome for the busiest of us.
