Francis Has Published Another Book - and No One Is Paying Attention
The book has been described as a "text event", but so far, more than a week after its publication on 2 October, interest in it has been minimal.
The exclusive rights to excerpts were granted to IlFattoQuotidiano.it, a newspaper representing the regime's ideology, and not to L'Osservatore Romano or Civiltà cattolica.
According to MessaInLatino.it, the book is a banal florilegium of ideological banalities amid the usual feminism and the omnipresent Mother Earth, the usual "patriarchy", class struggle and clichés.
Pope Francis accompanies his reflections with a selection of female figures (for example Jane Austen, Hannah Arendt, Agatha Christie, Emily Dickinson, Frida Kahlo, Edith Stein, Sappho, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Anna Frank, Maria Montessori, St Catherine of Siena, Virginia Woolf), many of them controversial, whom he uses as examples of what he considers virtues to be imitated.
Here is an example of Pope Francis's banalities: "You are harmony, you are poetry, you are beauty. If we want to weave the threads of our days with humanity, we can only begin with you. Your 'genius' can make a decisive contribution to public life and plays an indispensable role in the family. There is no doubt that much more needs to be done on your behalf. It is important that your voice is heard more, that it carries more weight. Your authority must be recognised. We must learn from the gaze with which Jesus looked at you. We must learn from his gaze that points through you to a road that leads far. We have only travelled a small part of it. We have not yet fully discovered the things you can see with other eyes. I know that your heart is more patient, more creative. I know that you are more sensitive and tender. I know that you are more courageous than men, and indeed, there, at the foot of the cross, they flee, but not you, you remain. I know that you are true strength, that you are the reserve of all humanity. I know that whatever your name, whatever your age, whatever your condition, you, wife, lover, mother, sister, friend, are unique".
The book is published by Libreria Pienogiorno in collaboration with Libreria Editrice Vaticana.
