Assumption of Our Lady.
The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been celebrated on August 15th since the 5th century, meaning "Birth into Heaven," or, according to Byzantine tradition, "Dormition." In Rome, this feast had been celebrated since the mid-7th century, but it was not until November 1, 1950, when Pius XII proclaimed the Dogma of the Assumption of Mary, assumed body and soul into heaven.
In the Apostles' Creed, we profess our faith in the "resurrection of the flesh" and in "eternal life," the ultimate goal and meaning of the journey of earthly life. This promise of faith was fulfilled in Mary, a sign of "consolation and hope" (Preface). This is a privilege of Mary, intimately linked to her being the Mother of Jesus: since death and the corruption of the human body are consequences of sin, it was not appropriate for the Virgin Maryβfree from sinβto be implicated in this human law.
