In early March, the organizing committee for the upcoming Paris Olympics released its official promotional poster, featuring familiar Parisian landmarks—the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Dôme des Invalides—dropped into a brightly colored and surrealistic landscape of stadiums, Olympic rings, and cheering crowds. Something was conspicuously missing, though. The poster depicts the Dôme des Invalides, commissioned by Louis XIV and repository of Napoleon's tomb, without the gilded Christian cross that has adorned its pinnacle since its construction in the late seventeenth century. Instead of a cross, the poster shows a simple spike, like the one on top of the Chrysler Building.

Good Friday: Holy Communion?

I think that I ... and perhaps, you ... am so habituated by, and to, modern customs, that we might not always realise that Receiving the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar on Good Friday is neither universal; nor the custom, traditio, of all the ages. And not even 'primitive'.
It may now be the almost universal custom in the modern Roman Rite, even in those places where pre-Conciliar usages are valued, for everybody to do what by custom they do every Sunday: to go 'up' and to receive the Sacrament. But "the first witness of the reception of the Eucharist on the Friday of Holy Week is found in the Ordo Einsiedlensis written in the eighth century but recording the custom of the middle of the preceding century".
Pope Innocent I (401-417) wrote to the the Bishop of Gubbio that "the Tradition of the Church is very strongly that the sacraments are not celebrated" on this Friday and Saturday.

Palm Sunday (1)

I am going to reuse three pieces about Palm Sunday which I wrote some years ago. My reason is that they offer a radical alternative to the narrative we normally accept about the meaning of Palm Sunday.
I think I will leave in place the old threads.
The liturgies for Palm Sunday which are in use, de jure or de facto, in the 'Roman Rite' of the Latin Church are:
(1) S Pius V
(2) Pius XII (1955)
(3) The Novus Ordo.
I am not going to say much about (3). I am going to explain why, in my opinion, (2) is as bad as, if not worse than, (3), and I will explain what was lost when (1) was displaced by (2).
A spin-off from this is: we need to understand that 'the Council' is not the problem; Hannibal Bugnini was put in place by Pius XII, and the mayhem which the pair of them created in 1955 was just the first stage of the deformation of the Roman Rite which some good people erroneously attribute to 'Vatican II'. Pius XII should not be thought of as a Hero of Tradition.

Agreed, 100%. Sadly, the FSSPs indult for the pre-55 expired in 2021, and they did not think it opportune to ask for an extension. I would never inconvenience myself to go to the Triduum done with the 62 Missal ever again. I actually know of one diocesan TLM parish that did the pre-55 last year. Not sure what they are doing this year. I’m fortunate that the nearest TLM to me now is a new ICKSP oratory.

Improper liaisons inside the House

Attentive readers of Scripture will have noticed that the Ioseph typikos, of whom our blessed Lady's chaste Spouse is the Antitypos, is described (Genesis 39) in the Vulgate (and the Neo-Vulgate) and the Septuagint as having been sold as a slave to Potiphar, 'Eunuch' of Pharaoh. Indeed, Brown Driver Briggs gives "Eunuch" as the central meaning of the Hebrew SRIS.
Eunuchs were very often Great Men in ancient kingdoms because a sovereign could be moderately confident that they would not spend their time and ingenuity squirreling away state resources for their own offspring. Since, therefore, great officers of state were often eunuchs, it will often yield apparently good sense to translate SRIS as "Officer" or "Courtier" or (Tyndale) "Lorde".
And, of course, that rendering will prevent naive people from blurting out "But how can a eunuch have a wife?" Nor will puzzled children ask what a Yew Nuck is and, when told, get out their pen-knives and start experimenting on the household pets. …

In Pagan/Protestant England, visiting one of the ancient Cathedrals in the custody of the body once known as the Church of England is comparatively straightforward. You enter; they do their best to extract some money from you; then you decide whether to buy a guide book. The advantage of doing this is that it will almost certainly contain a plan of the building, showing where each chapel is. I believe that Ireland still preempts Lenten Sundays with St. Patrick’s feast. It is only transferred if during Holy Week, to the Monday following the Octave of Easter. This happened in 2008.

The Green Man (2)

Julia Hamilton-Udny, daughter of Robert 11th Lord Belhaven, married Fitzroy Richard Somerset, 4th Baron Raglan. He was an atheist and a humanist and an anthropologist; he was a member of the All-Party Humanist Group at Westminster, and a prominent member of the British Humanist Association.
It is commonly said that Lady Raglan invented the term 'Green Man' and the mythology surrounding this figure; and that she did so in 1939. None of this is precisely accurate: the term Green Man had for centuries been applied to figures in English Folklore. But the rigmarole associated with this figure since the 1930s can certainly attributed to her. Don't skip the opening pages

I learned quite a time ago the importance of looking through the stuff at the beginning of liturgical books.
I was fortunate enough to have come into possession of the (the Henry Bradshaw edition of) the Ordinale Exoniense, all four volumes by Bishop John Grandisson ('grauns'n'); gracious me, what a workoholic micromanager the dear old fellow was. By chance, my eye fell upon mid-August. After the Assumption on August 15, August 18 offers Sol in Virgine.

It got me wondering whether this astronomical datum might explain why the Heavenly Birthday of the Mother of God should have been fixed in the middle of August.
But stay. Years later, Nicholas Orchard published his superb edition of the Stowe Missal. And the Exeter Diocesan Clergy Book Fund provided me with a copy. That book also has oodles of introductory material. And here also, perhaps three centuries before the Ordinale, we find ... well, this time it's Sol in Virginem. what a terrible schoolboy error ... an accusative …

The ruptures of the 'reformation' period meant that, very often, accurate information about Church Dedications was lost. In the eighteenth century, 'antiquarians' did their best to discover this information (Ecton; Willis). Sadly, they often relied upon suspect methodologies. The same thing happened in the nineteenth century (Arnold Foster; Bond; Crockford's Clerical Directory). So a lot of dodgy 'information' got left on the record.
My friend Dr Simon Cotton, whose erudition and breadth of knowledge is very considerable, has, over the years, sent me papers and off-prints relating to this subject, and much of what I may know is the result of his generosity.

Deus misereatur again

Dr R F Littledale, the continuator of John Mason Neale's four-volume commentary on the (Coverdale) psalter, had a bit of a temptation to want to educate the (Anglican) clergy. So, in this psalm, he likes the idea that in verse 6 (where the correct and LXX/Vulgate reading is The earth hath brought forth her fruit), earth refers to our most blessed Lady; and he quotes (Octoechus) anerotos aroura horathes, ton stachun tekousa tes zoes. anerotos aroura ... gracious me, how those Byzantines did love that sort of thing ... as Peter Wimsey admitted with regard to himself, they were drunk on words; never really quite sober.
In the old Breviaries, Deus misereatur was umbilically joined to psalm 62/63; the latter preceded Deus misereatur and they shared one Gloria, one antiphon. This seems to me fitting: upon waking I recall my afflictions, my thirst ... but the combined psalm ends with the song of glory and divine blessing, which is Deus misereatur.

Thou shalt not pray for the pope ... nor for the Bishops ...

Is today, February 26, the Feast of an Apostle? No; S Matthias was on the 24th. BUT this is a leap year ... so the Apostle should be observed on the correct number of days before the Kalends of February. BUT more: that would get him onto a Sunday in Lent, which would be very wicked indeed. So he gets transferred onto Monday the 26th of February.
I love these Feasts of the Apostles. But, on these days, I am nowadays sometimes slightly saddened by the recollection that, since 1970, most of my fellow presbyters of the Roman Rite have been forbidden ... YES!! ... FORBIDDEN ... to pray for the pope or for the hierarchy in the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer.
Before that year, the Praefatio of the Mass for Apostles begged God to grant that he would not desert his flock but would guard it through his blessed Apostles with continual protection; that she might be governed by those same helmsmen whom the Father had appointed as vicarious shepherds of his Work.

Fiducia Supplicans

I think a change has been made in the way documents of the Dicastery for the Doctine of the Faith are presented. And not a change for the better.
In the old days, these documents concluded with a statement that the Roman Pontiff had agreed the document, and ordered it to be be published. But, in the case of Fiducia Supplicans, this is replaced by the words Responsum ad 'dubium'de benedictione unionem personarum eiusdem sexus, et Nota esplicativa. Ex Audientia Die 18 Dicembre 2023 FRANCESCO.
The Cardinal Prefect, in a text he has added to the top of the document, refers to the pope thus: "he approved it with his signature".
Although published in a rich variety of languages, this document has not appeared in Latin. Moreover, there is not (as there sometimes is) an indication of the original language of the text. Saint David ... ??

It's a little while until March 1, so I'm sneaking in with a query seeking information in good time ... it concerns the liturgical observance ... or not ... of S David, in accordance with the hints to be gleaned from Tradition and past praxis.
I begin with the Victorian period and its evidence.
I have an 1874 Breviary. It contains a single appendix for 'Anglia'. This appears to treat Wales as part of England. It does have S David on March 1, but not with any particular dignity. He is a plain "Double". The assumption must be that in every part of England and Wales he was observed, and with that rank.
9 November 1943: the SRC granted a Calendar to the English Diocese of Nottingham. It has nothing indicated for 1 March.
In 1949, Burns Oates Washbourne published a bilingual hand-missal with copious information about British local Calendars. On 1 March, S David was observed as a "double" in: Westminster, Cardiff, Menevia, and Portsmouth. I can imagine historical reasons for the Westminster …

Part (2) of the Bishop of Lamus.

In the first half of this piece, I demonstrated the shifty treatment which an old prayer received at the hands of the liturgists of 1943. I also wished to suggest to you that, whereas the seventh century original was about the Church of Rome and its protection by its august Apostolic Patrons, in 1943 the spotlight falls on the lonelier, soltary figure of the Bishop of Rome ... whom we rather hope will continually protect the Roman Church.
I can best illustate this by a quotation or two from the sam ancient source.
In an adjacent Preface, we learn that, however many heretics there are around (errantium multitudo), the true Sons of the Father's Redemption are those who do not make a different noise from from the principalis Traditio; who follow quidquid sedes illa censuerit quam tenere voluisti totius ecclesiae principatum.

The Bishop of Lamus (1)

Edward Myers, titular Bishop of Lamus and Vicar Capitular of Westminster, sat at his desk to deal with his correspondence on June 10 1943 ... the Thursday, Octave day, after the Ascension. He was a good liturgist who wrote a small book on the Lenten Liturgy which I commend. But, on that Thursday, Stuff was Happening in the Med. The 'Allies' were interested in a little island called Pantelleria, off the coast of Sicily and, therefore, a useful possible base from which to open up a front in Sicily ... and, thence, in Western Europe. The invasion of this tiny island was envisaged and planned. But it never took place.
As Myers sat at his desk, the Axis commander on Pantelleria, at his desk, was receiving permission from Rome to surrender. On Friday, the surrender came into effect. And before the end of July, Il Duce had been sacked by Italy's midget Piedmontese monarch and ... the tide of war had turned.
