It occurs to me that part of the reason Recognize & Resist is a more popular response than Sedevacantism to the realization that Bergoglio is a non-Catholic is modern man’s inclination toward individualism, libertarianism & anti-authoritarianism, and his preference for limited & democratic forms of governance.
Many don’t believe in papal infallibility, not only because Vatican II antipopes caused doubt or confusion, but also because they’ve been programmed to view authority as deriving from the consent of men rather than from God, and to look with mistrust if not disdain upon any sort of autocracy. They aren’t so worried about the implications of recognizing false popes as legitimate because they don’t view the papacy as necessary or important except insofar as there are supposed to be successors to St. Peter, even if only as figureheads.
