These practices “were not just to toughen us up” but to “require us to be out of step”, he said. Scalia noted the sense of “differentness” should have enabled Catholics “to be strong enough on bigger issues” such as abortion, contraception and divorce.

God's holy, perfect will be done. 
If there is surely no way for another Scalia to be named, then God has something else in mind. May we be found ready and willing to receive both what He ordains and permits. And yet you are right - we would not ask for God to show up with a flame thrower.
