Francis published the July 22 Motu Proprio Ad charisma tuendum concerning the neo-conservative and submissive Prelature Opus Dei.
He decrees that the Opus Dei is put under the Congregation for the Clergy, not under the Congregation for Bishops. This measure treats the group like any other clerical community, although the Opus Dei is a lay organisation, and not - as they would have wished - as a diocese.
Even more important, Francis doesn't want the superior of the Opus Dei to be a bishop. The punitive measure is presented with the sarcastic comment: “For the protection of the peculiar gift of the Spirit, a form of government based more on charism than on hierarchical authority is needed."
The superior of Opus Dei may not use the episcopal insignia, but is given the title of Apostolic Protonotary and is addressed as Reverend Monsignor.
Opus Dei was founded 1928 by a northern Spaniard as the Jesuits to be a revival of them. It had two bishops, Álvaro del Portillo (1982-1994) and Javier …More

Opus Dei tried to play ball with Rome and got crushed. I hope FSSP and ICKSP are paying attention.

Opus Dei kept their heads down and stayed quiet about the Vatican scandals. They thought they paid and would be left alone. Now, they face reality.
Opus Dei founder Josemaria Escriva said that he would rather have one of his "daughters" die without the Last Sacraments than to receive them from a Jesuit. (See the book "Beyond the Threshold" by Maria del Carmen Tapia.) The Jesuit -- Opus Dei feud goes back decades. And that statement doesn't say a lot for Escriva's sanctity.

Opus Dei is not conservative. Maybe it started out that way, but many are as liberal as the Francis type clergy. All the persecution and restrictions Francis is doing to the traditionalist CAtholics will backfire badly on him, and will be swept away by the new Pope.

It would be better if we had a traditionalist Pope who would go after the Jesuits, once and for all. But they are getting so old, and so few, that maybe it doesn't even matter.
