Francis Has Given up Presiding at the Novus Ordo Eucharist

For Specola (InfoVaticana.com, 25 March) it is "terrible to note" that Francis has not presided at the Eucharist for years: "He doesn't do it in public, but he doesn't do it in private either."

The only exception was on All Souls' Day, when he presided with the master of ceremonies.

"We are not talking about a man who has such serious health problems that he cannot preside at a Eucharist," 'Specola' notes.

Francis is able to stand: "He stands when he wants to and does so in Santa Marta as elsewhere."

'Specola' writes that for the life of a priest, the Eucharist is "the most important event of the day" and that "there cannot be a day without the priest celebrating and offering the sacrifice of the Mass for himself and for his people".

"What example does Francis set for all priests?" he adds: "If there are real conditions that prevent him from presiding, at least explain them to the faithful and make sure they understand this aspect, which otherwise risks becoming a real scandal".

Why does Gloria TV refer to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as a "Eucharist?" Are they simply mocking the Novus Ordo Mass, or have they simply adopted the "modern" name for the liturgy?

Perhaps because the Council of Trent teaches solemnly that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the Eucharist.

Eucharist is a noble term - as in Eucharistic adoration! We shouldn't let the modernists aversion to saying "Mass" lead to abandoning it. Also it seems to me most of these people prefer 'liturgy' as a label for Mass since it makes it equal to other liturgies in the Church, such as the Divine Office [Liturgy of the Hours].

The problem is that two groups of people seem to deny the Council of Trent teaching (Sess. XXII) that the Eucharist IS the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass:
- modernists who use the Eucharist term instead of the Mass (to run away from a sacrifical aspect),
- pseudo-traditionalists who want to avoid the term Eucharist considering it as new / modern which is not the case.

The priest offers Christ's sacrifice, is not a "presider." But the Novus Ordo makes it seem irrelevant whether one is a "presider" or an "assessor". Pope Francis is just being consistent.

He must be cheering the fact that many parishes that used to have 2 public, daily masses, Monday through Saturday, now have fewer than one per day, on average, and often only 2 or 3 per week. I suppose that it is all according to plan.

One parish I went to years ago had a Rosary group (which I took part in) that recited the Rosary prior to Mass. The priest disliked it so much that on pretext of "church renovations" he cancelled daily Mass. When questioned he just sent us packing to a nearby parish. However, daily Mass was restored when the diocesan chancery got complaints. We could now return to Mass at our own parish - but not totally! Two days a week the deacon did a "Communion service." After all that I left to join another more conservative parish staffed by good Dominicans.

The author writes: "'for the life of a priest, the Eucharist is "the most important event of the day" Well that was true [and still is] for traditional priests. BUT since Vatican II the priest is no longer a mediator fulfilling a sacrificial role, but merely a 'presider' - a job that anyone could really fill: deacon, religious sister, layman [or woman].
Hence the rise of priests having 'days off' so they can have a break from all that church stuff. I've been to communities where the "priest" sat in the pews while some layperson gave a "reflection"; huge con-celebrations with priests vested at BEST in alb & stole, but many with simply a stole over a clerical suit or even regular street clothes! One diocese I lived in had NO MASS during the priests' annual retreat for days - they called it "3 days of darkness" Oh and this in the 80s way before mandatory govt. lock downs. One parish had a morning Mass followed by a "Communion service" led by a nun because many preferred the later time!!
So yeah - Francis is a product of the "New Pentecost/Springtime"
