Two small children were mauled to death by two pit bulls on Wednesday while their mother sustained severe injuries in attempting to pull the dogs off, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department. When authorities arrived at around 3:30 p.m. at the family home on the 700 block of Sylvan Road near Shelby Forest State Park in Tennessee, they found Lilly Jane, two, and Hollace Dean, five months old, dead on the scene. Their mother, Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, was found seriously wounded and was rushed by fire paramedics in critical condition to Regional One Health in Memphis. Sad to hear this. Many of these fatal cases the pit bulls are either abused (used for dog fighting) or not well trained by their owners. I have a pit and she is a great dog. They bond with the owner for life and if you are attacked by a would be criminal they will literally give their life courageously defending you. And, I would hate to be that bad guy on the receiving end of things. They are strong and fierce but require a strong owner who will establish an alpha relationship. However, if they are properly trained and loved they are no more dangerous than any other breed of dog.
My pit got out of my house once but as trained didn't leave the property. When I found her she was sitting at the edge of my yard watching people walk around my yard in the street but she didn't bother them. In this story the dog's owners were not around and the dogs were out running around the neighborhood. That's not the definition of being well trained. I blame the owners.
I missed the fact that the woman attacked was the owner, but their are no specific details or history on how the animals were trained or treated, or if the dogs were adopted from a rescue shelter. There have been other such cases where the adopted pit bulls turned on them. Still a tragic case.
