The Catholic Church in Japan, in collaboration with European religious groups, is set to establish a new pilgrimage route in southern Japan to honor the first Christian missionaries and the “hidden Christians” who preserved their faith despite centuries of persecution. Pope Leo XIV is facing a lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights concerning the Vatican's decision to suspend pension payments to two former IOR managers, Paolo Cipriani and Massimo Tulli. Although both were convicted by Vatican courts for mismanagement, earlier Vatican rulings had ordered that their pensions be reinstated at a reduced rate. However, in April 2025, the Vatican Court of Cassation overturned these decisions, ruling that pensions are not an acquired right. Cipriani and Tulli are now appealing to the ECHR, claiming that this violates Vatican pension regulations and the European Convention on Human Rights.
