I totally agree with the UW quote and often mention some of these points on the roots of the Enlightenment philosophy in my classes. However, the Enlightenment Rationalists who were Jewish were only so by birth or race. Marx, was an atheist and Spinoza was kicked out of the synagogue for being a pantheist. They were not practicing religious-Jews, which is the distinction I initially made.
