Sogleich brach er mit seinen Begleitern auf, erreichte die Hafenstadt Neapolis und ging dann sofort weiter zur nächsten größeren Stadt, nach Philippi. Philippi war damals eine bedeutende Handelsstadt. Sie lag an der Via Egnatia, die den Osten des Römischen Reiches mit dem und Westen verband und vom Bosporus über das griechische Festland zum Mittelmeer führte. Dort setze man mit Schiffen nach Italien über und gelangte über die Via Appia nach Rom.
